Echocardiograms
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound test of the heart. It is used to evaluate the size, thickness, and pumping function of the heart. It can also help evaluate murmurs, valve problems, or fluid around the heart. The test is non-invasive, which means no needles, catheters or dyes are used and it causes no discomfort to the patient.
Doppler and color flow imaging are also used to aid in the diagnosis of potential heart disease. This is no special preparation needed for this test. The echocardiogram test will take approximately 30 minutes and all results are completed within 48 hours. Your cardiology physician will review your results at your follow-up appointment with your doctor.
Stress Echocardiograms
Stress echocardiograms combines a treadmill test with an echocardiogram. This test will help your physician determine if there are areas of your heart which do not receive enough blood supply due to possible coronary artery disease. Ultrasound images are acquired before and immediately after exercising on the treadmill. During the treadmill testing, you will be continuously monitored for blood pressure, heart rate, and rhythm changes. Preparations for this test include not eating or drinking anything two hours prior to your appointment time. Wear comfortable walking shoes. This test will take approximately 1 hour and your physician will be present.
